Rush Stewart is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Rochester. He previously held positions as a Lecturer at King’s College London and an Assistant Professor at the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP) at LMU Munich. He completed his PhD in Philosophy (2017) at Columbia University, focusing on aggregating probabilities, preferences, and full beliefs.
Education:
- PhD in Philosophy, Columbia University (2017)
Research Interests:
Rush works at the intersection of decision theory, formal epistemology, and algorithmic fairness. His recent work explores the philosophical foundations of statistical fairness criteria in predictive algorithms, the role of ideals in normative evaluation, and the implications of epistemic uncertainty for egalitarian principles. He also investigates population ethics, the merging of opinions in Bayesian settings, and the theoretical limits of testimonial justice.
Notable Trends in Publications:
His recent publications (2024) address algorithmic fairness, including critiques of calibration and equalized odds, the development of the Spanning criterion, and applications of ensemble forecasting to the wisdom of crowds. He has also contributed to debates on the precautionary principle under deep uncertainty, the structural parallels between fair risk assessment and testimonial justice, and the philosophical implications of probabilistic concepts like conglomerability and geometric pooling.
Scientific Awards:
- Visiting Fellow at MCMP (2015)
