Rukmini Chakraborty

Rukmini Chakraborty is a Researcher in the Department of History at the European University Institute. Her research focuses on Indian Ocean history, the history of capitalism, law and society dynamics, and environmental history, with a specific thesis on commercial regulations and colonial maritime law in the Bay of Bengal (1790-1857). She is supervised by Giancarlo Casale and co-supervised by Giorgio Riello. Rukmini joined the EUI as part of the 2022 cohort and is affiliated with the Department of History, which explores global and transnational historical themes. Her work intersects with broader academic initiatives at the EUI, including research on colonialism, maritime law, and environmental justice.
