Ruixue Jia

Ruixue Jia is Professor of Economics at the School of Global Policy and Strategy (UC San Diego) and co-director of the China Data Lab. She actively contributes to academic leadership as executive secretary of the Association of Comparative Economic Studies (ACES) and co-chair of the China Economic Summer Institute (CESI).

Her research integrates economics, history, and politics to study how power structures influence economic development. Recent work focuses on the political economy of idea formation and diffusion, particularly the interactions between state institutions, education systems, science, and technology. She co-authored the book The Highest Exam, which examines China's education system's role in shaping societal structures.

Jia holds affiliations with leading institutions including the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD), the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), and the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). She serves on editorial boards of top journals like the American Economic Review and Economic Journal.
