Rui Zhao is an Assistant Professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Informatics at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO), College of Information Science & Technology. His work bridges cybersecurity, software security, and human-computer interaction, with a strong emphasis on usable privacy and automated vulnerability detection.
His research interests include:
- Web, cloud, and mobile security and privacy
- Software security and automatic vulnerability analysis
- Human factors in security (usable security)
Dr. Zhao has been recognized for his impactful doctoral research, receiving the 2016 Rath Award for Best Ph.D. Thesis with Potential for Greatest Societal Impact and the 2015 Outstanding Ph.D. Student in Security award. His teaching includes foundational courses such as Introduction to Information Security (CYBR1100) and Linux Administration (CYBR3350). He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Colorado School of Mines in 2016, with prior degrees from Xidian University in China. Before academia, he worked as a software and system engineer at ZTE Co. from 2008 to 2011, contributing to operations support systems and network management platforms.
His scientific honors include:

- Outstanding Ph.D. Student in Security (2015)
