Rui Li serves as Associate Professor of Geography, Planning, and Sustainability and Associate Dean for Social Sciences at the University at Albany's College of Arts and Sciences. She maintains an active affiliation with the Spatial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Muenster's Institute for Geoinformatics.
Education:
- PhD, The Pennsylvania State University
Research Focus: Dr. Li pioneers interdisciplinary work at the intersection of Geographic Information Science and Spatial Cognition, specializing in wayfinding behaviors, navigation systems, and GIS applications for health equity. Her research tackles critical societal issues including minority health disparities, redlining impacts on later-life health, and spatial epidemiology of pandemics. Current projects develop cognitively optimized wayfinding solutions and location-based services for indoor/outdoor environments.
Publication Trends: Recent works (2021-2025) demonstrate accelerating integration of deep learning with geospatial analysis—evident in cerebral artery morphology studies and dementia prediction models—while maintaining core strengths in spatial cognition for autonomous vehicles and pandemic response. Over 70% of recent publications address health disparities through spatial lenses.
Scientific Recognition:
- Honorary Award for Distinguished Community Engagement (President's Awards for Exemplary Public Engagement, 2022)
Grants & Community Impact: Secured major funding including German Science Foundation's WayTO project and EU Erasmus+ strategic partnerships. Her award-winning community engagement combines spatial analysis with grassroots initiatives to address urban health inequities, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Research Ecosystem: Leads collaborative teams across the Spatial Intelligence Laboratory (Muenster) and University at Albany, bridging geography, public health, and computer science to advance spatial literacy and health equity solutions.
