Rudiyanto Gunawan

Rudiyanto Gunawan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University at Buffalo, leading the Chemical and Biological Systems Engineering Laboratory (CABSEL). His research focuses on computational systems biology, bioinformatics, and mathematical modeling to understand biological networks and their applications in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, drug discovery, and aging. He holds academic appointments at institutions including ETH Zurich and the National University of Singapore, and is active in professional organizations such as the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

Education includes a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (2003), with prior roles as a postdoctoral fellow at UC Santa Barbara and research assistant at UIUC. His professional activities span editorial roles, conference organizing, and committee service in systems biology and computational biology.

Research interests include network inference, dynamical systems modeling, and design of experiments, applied to areas like mitochondrial DNA mutagenesis, stem cell differentiation, and glycosylation pathways. He has contributed to tools like DeltaNeTS+, CrossTx, and GlycoEnzOnto, aiming to bridge large-scale biological data with actionable insights for disease intervention.

His work integrates single-cell transcriptomics, metabolic flux analysis, and machine learning to address challenges in aging, neurobiology, and biopharmaceutical processes. CABSEL’s projects emphasize translational applications, such as optimizing monoclonal antibody production and understanding Alzheimer’s disease mechanisms through systems approaches.
