Dr. Rudi de Vries is a Lecturer in the Department of Global Economics and Management at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Groningen. He also holds a secondary appointment as Lecturer in the Department of Arts, Culture, and Media Studies at the Faculty of Arts. His primary teaching responsibilities include courses in Strategic, International and Cross-Cultural Management, International Business Theories, Management of Arts Organizations, and Cultural Entrepreneurship across both undergraduate and graduate programs.
His educational background includes:
- Doctorate degree from University of Groningen, Faculty of Economics and Business (2004-2012), PhD dissertation: "Comics and Co-evolutions. A Study of the Dynamics in the Niche of Comics Publishers in the Low Countries" (2012)
- Doctoral degree from University of Groningen, Faculty of Arts, Arts and Arts Policy (1983-1988)
- English Language and Literature from University of Groningen, Faculty of Arts (1980-1983)
Dr. de Vries specializes in Strategic and International Management with particular expertise in Management of the Arts and Cultural Industries and Cultural Entrepreneurship. His research explores institutional dynamics within creative sectors, focusing on how cultural organizations navigate between market and aesthetic logics. He has developed a distinctive body of work examining comics publishing across European contexts, particularly investigating organizational change and cultural evolution within this niche industry.
His scholarly output demonstrates consistent thematic focus on creative industries over two decades, with recent publications showing increased international comparative analysis. His work bridges organizational theory, cultural studies, and international business perspectives, with particular attention to how cultural institutions maintain autonomy while engaging with broader economic systems. Dr. de Vries actively supervises Bachelor's and Master's theses for both the International Business and Arts, Culture and Media programs. He coordinates years 2 and 3 of the BSc International Business program and teaches courses including Cross-Cultural Management, International Strategic Management, and Management and Entrepreneurship in the Arts. He has extensive experience conducting audience research and policy evaluations for governmental and cultural institutions.
He is a member of the research group "Arts and Institutional Change" and has recently published the book "Comparative Dynamics in the Comics Industry" (Routledge, 2025). He is currently working on research examining the role of Protestantism in worldwide reading preferences using World Values Survey data, demonstrating his continued scholarly productivity and interdisciplinary approach.
