Rubén Gallo is the Walter S. Carpenter, Jr. Professor in Language, Literature, and Civilization of Spain, and Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Princeton University. He specializes in Latin American literature, cultural history, and the intersection of psychoanalysis, architecture, and modernism. His research spans topics such as Mexican avant-garde movements, Freud’s reception in Mexico, and Cuba’s cultural dynamics. Gallo holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and a B.A. in English from Yale University.
He is affiliated with Princeton’s School of Architecture, Program in European Cultural Studies, and Department of Comparative Literature. His notable awards include the Gradiva Prize and the MLA’s Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize. Recent works include Havana Modern (2023) and a conversation book with Mario Vargas Llosa.
Gallo’s research often bridges literature, art, and architecture, particularly focusing on Cuba and Mexico. He teaches courses on Freud, modernism, and Latin American cultural studies. His books explore themes like urban culture in Havana, the role of sexuality in Cuban society, and the influence of Proust on Latin American writers.
