Roy Welsch is the Eastman Kodak Leaders for Global Operations Professor of Management and Statistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He holds a PhD in Mathematics from Stanford University and has been a faculty member at MIT since 1969, advancing to full Professor in 1979. His research focuses on robust statistical methods, financial modeling, process control, and applications in electronic commerce and finance. He has held leadership roles, including directing the MIT Statistics Center (1981–1989) and serving as the Leaders for Manufacturing Chair (1988–1993).
Dr. Welsch’s work includes seminal contributions to regression diagnostics (via a co-authored book) and robust estimation techniques. His current research spans credit scoring, volatility modeling, and reliability measurement. He teaches courses in data analysis, applied statistics, and quality control with practical applications in finance and marketing.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the American Statistical Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His career includes collaborations with the National Bureau of Economic Research (1973–1979) on econometric modeling systems. He is affiliated with MIT’s Institute for Data, Systems, and Society.
