Dr. Damen investigates early integration processes among recently arrived refugees in the Netherlands through a multi-perspectival, multi-dimensional, and multi-directional lens. Her research examines how discrimination, refugee-specific characteristics, and societal participation impact refugees' sense of belonging and mental health, with primary focus on Syrian permit holders as the largest recent arrival group. She employs mixed-method approaches combining quantitative surveys and qualitative focus groups to capture integration complexities.
Recent publications (2023-2024) analyze the implementation and impact of the Netherlands' new civic integration law, particularly in Rotterdam. Key themes include challenges in early integration phases, resource needs for dual integration trajectories (combining language acquisition and labor market entry), and evaluation of policy expectations versus outcomes. Her outputs bridge academic research and policy practice through journal articles, technical reports, and web publications.
Dr. Damen actively collaborates with researchers including J. Dagevos and W. Huijnk, presenting findings at academic conferences on refugee reception systems and socio-cultural positioning. Her work informs both scholarly discourse on migration studies and practical policy development in municipal integration services.
