Ross Arena is Professor and Head of the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Illinois at Chicago within the College of Applied Health Sciences. He also serves as a Member of the Integrative Physiology Laboratory and has held faculty appointments in the UIC Graduate College. Dr. Arena has extensive international experience with visiting professorships at institutions in Brazil, Italy, and Canada.

Dr. Arena's research focuses on cardiopulmonary physical therapy and exercise science, with particular emphasis on exercise testing and training for patients with cardiopulmonary disease. He is a leading advocate for shifting from physician-dominated care to collaborative team approaches involving doctors, nurses, exercise physiologists, nutritionists, and therapists to prevent lifestyle-related diseases. His work promotes healthy living initiatives across the lifespan to improve healthspan. He has published extensively in these areas with over 1,100 peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, and book chapters.
