She maintains dual office locations at Mater Dei Hospital (Room 12, Block A, Level 1) and the Biomedical Sciences Building in Msida (Room 420), with contact numbers +356 2340 1107 and +356 2340 3281.
Her educational background includes a B.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (Cantab.), as indicated by her credentials B.Sc.,M.Phil.,Ph.D.(Cantab.).
Dr. Farrugia's research focuses on the clinical application of genomic technologies with particular emphasis on:
- Bioinformatics for analysis of High Throughput Sequencing data
- Implementation of genomic medicine in clinical diagnostics
- Epigenetics and model systems including Zebrafish and Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells
- Training healthcare professionals in genomic technologies
As a key organizer of the TrainMALTA project (a Horizon 2020 Twinning Programme), she has coordinated numerous training events including the HTS Bioinformatics Summer School, Model Systems Summer School, Epigenomics Summer School, and multiple networking events connecting University of Malta researchers with experts from University of Cambridge and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
Her leadership extends to policy development in genomic medicine, as demonstrated by her involvement in the Genomic Medicine Policy Meeting held in September 2017, which addressed critical issues including informed consent, ethical considerations, and secure handling of genomic data within data protection frameworks.
Dr. Farrugia has demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration through initiatives like the 'Introduction to Genetics for IT Scientists' course she co-organized in September 2016, and the EMBL-EBI Roadshow in February 2017 where she served as local organizer for bioinformatics training.
