Rose Lugano is a Teaching Professor of Swahili Language and Literature at the University of Florida, affiliated with the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LLC) since 2004. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature with a minor in Women Studies from Pennsylvania State University.

Her research focuses on the self-hood and identity formation of African girls and women in literary texts written in Swahili and English, particularly within the female Bildungsroman genre. She also explores comparative literature, African cultures, children's literature, and translation studies.
Rose teaches beginning to advanced Swahili language courses and African Women Writers. Her pedagogical work spans over four decades, including teaching experience in Kenya starting in 1981. She has presented at conferences on language documentation and pedagogy.
