Rosalie Hans is a Researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Department of Art and Culture, History, Antiquity. She serves as a Project Researcher in the PM: Pressing Matter - Ownership, Value and the Question of Colonial Heritage in Museums initiative (2021-2025), focusing on Dutch colonial entanglements and heritage. She is also a programmaraadslid (program advisor) for DutchCulture since 2020.
Her research interests span colonial history, anti-slavery movements, and the socio-political roles of museums. Key projects include analyzing Dutch colonial legacies and post-devolution governance in African contexts. She supervises four PhD candidates exploring topics like colonial heritage and women’s rights.
Publications include a 2021 chapter on Kenya’s national museums, examining their evolution amid post-colonial transitions. Her work often bridges historical scholarship with contemporary debates on cultural institutions and justice.
Collaborations involve international networks, particularly in African and Dutch institutions, addressing colonial entanglements and heritage repatriation. Grants include full funding for the PM project, emphasizing interdisciplinary research.
