Rosa Marvell is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Portsmouth, affiliated with the School of Area Studies, Sociology, History, Politics and Literature within the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences. She joined in 2021 after postdoctoral research at Oxford Brookes University and prior roles at the Institute for Employment Studies. Her expertise lies in intersectional social inequalities, focusing on post-compulsory education and workplace inclusion. She leads the MSc Sociology program and teaches courses on social inequalities, research methods, and gender/sexuality studies. Her research addresses topics like first-generation students' educational pathways, transgender inclusion, and care-experienced learners. She collaborates in initiatives such as the Sex and Sexuality Education Research Group (SSERG) and contributes to policy-relevant projects like the ESRC Impact Accelerator Account.
Education Background: Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Sussex (funded by ESRC), with prior roles as a Doctoral and Associate Tutor there. Postdoctoral work at Oxford Brookes University’s Widening Participation Evaluation Team. Earlier, Research Fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies, focusing on education and employment policies.
Research Focus: Prioritizes social justice through studies on higher education access, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and systemic barriers faced by marginalized groups. Key themes include:
