Ronnie Belmans is a Full Professor at KU Leuven, Belgium, specializing in electrical engineering and energy systems. He co-founded and chairs EnergyVille, a research hub for sustainable energy collaborating with VITO, imec, and UHasselt. His extensive institutional roles include:
- Honorary Chairman of ELIA (Belgian transmission operator)
- President of SCONE
- Board member of NIKO and SCK/CEN
- Former Chairman of VREG (Flemish energy regulator, 2016–2022)
His research analyzes smart grids, energy security, electricity market liberalization, and energy system modeling. He actively contributes to EU policy dialogues on carbon markets and peer-to-peer energy trading frameworks.
Belmans holds an MSc (1979) and PhD (1984) in Electrical Engineering from KU Leuven, with advanced degrees from KU Leuven (Special Doctorate, 1989) and RWTH Aachen (Habilitierung, 1993).
