Ronan Carroll is a Professor and Graduate Chair in the Department of Biological Sciences at Ohio University’s College of Arts and Sciences. He leads the Carroll Lab, located in the Life Science Building, and is affiliated with the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Institute. His research focuses on bacterial pathogenesis, particularly Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA, using advanced genomics and molecular biology techniques.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. from Trinity College, Dublin, and postdoctoral training at the University of Illinois at Chicago, The Methodist Hospital Research Institute, and the University of South Florida.
Dr. Carroll’s research interests span bacterial gene regulation, RNA biology, virulence mechanisms, and host-pathogen interactions. His lab employs next-generation sequencing to study transcriptomic changes in pathogens during infection. Research themes include regulatory networks, toxin secretion, stress response, and antibiotic resistance.
The recent publications from his lab highlight a strong focus on S. aureus virulence regulation, RNA-mediated control, and genomic analysis of pathogens. His work integrates molecular microbiology with systems biology approaches, contributing to vaccine and therapeutic development.
- Published in journals such as Molecular Microbiology and Infection and Immunity
- Active in undergraduate and graduate research training
- Regular participation in academic events like the Ohio University Student EXPO
Dr. Carroll has mentored numerous graduate and undergraduate students, including PhD graduates like Raeven Bastock and Marcus Wittekind, and master’s and bachelor’s students. His lab has received internal and external recognition, with students participating in programs like DAAD RISE Germany. Although no formal awards are listed, his consistent publication record and lab activity indicate strong research support and productivity.
The Carroll Lab maintains an active research environment with ongoing projects in bacterial genomics, RNA regulation, and pathogenesis. The lab welcomes new students annually, including PhD candidates and undergraduates, and fosters collaborations across disciplines. Lab news highlights thesis defenses, student placements, and scientific presentations, reflecting a dynamic and productive research group.
