Prof. Ronald Sluyter leads the Immunology and Cell Signalling Group at the University of Wollongong. His research focuses on P2X7 and other purinergic signalling molecules in human and veterinary health, with applications to graft-versus-host disease, cancer immunology, motor neurone disease, and inflammation.
His group explores the roles of purinergic receptors in immune regulation, platelet function across species, and oxidative stress mitigation. Recent work includes developing quantum-dot ceramic composites for radiation protection and comparative studies of platelet receptors.
Prof. Sluyter serves as interim Head of Postgraduate Studies and has extensive leadership experience. He has published over 155 publications, supervised 16 PhD completions, and secured numerous grants. His work is recognized internationally in purinergic signalling research.
Teaching: Prof. Sluyter coordinates biochemistry and immunology courses, and teaches pharmacology and infection/immunity subjects. He is accredited UOW Peer Reviewer and heads postgraduate programs in the School.
