Ronald L. Rivest is an Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), affiliated with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). He is a leader in the Cryptography and Information Security research group, focusing on areas such as cryptographic algorithms, election security, and machine learning. Rivest holds a B.A. in Mathematics from Yale University (1969) and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University (1974).
His research contributions include co-inventing the RSA public-key cryptosystem and founding companies like RSA Data Security and Verisign. He is renowned for his work on secure voting systems (e.g., Scantegrity) and contact tracing protocols (PACT). Rivest has advised over 40 PhD students and postdocs, many of whom are leaders in cryptography and computer science.
He is a recipient of the ACM Turing Award and a Fellow of the ACM and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Rivest has served as a director of the International Association for Cryptologic Research and contributed to foundational textbooks like Introduction to Algorithms.
