Ronald Koschny

Professor Ronald Koschny serves as Senior Physician at both the Interdisciplinary Endoscopy Center (IEZ) and the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Infectious Diseases, and Poisoning at Heidelberg University Hospital. He additionally holds leadership positions as Head of the Polyposis Consultation Hour and Section Head of the Section of Translational Endoscopy Research. Since 2015, he has maintained an Extraordinary Professorship in Internal Medicine at Heidelberg University, following his habilitation in the field in 2013.

Dr. Koschny received his medical degree from Leipzig University Medical Faculty in 2002, followed by postdoctoral work at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) from 2002-2006. He completed his clinical training in Internal Medicine with specialization in Gastroenterology, along with additional qualifications in Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine.

His research program focuses on interventional and experimental endoscopy techniques, with particular emphasis on polyposis syndromes and gastrointestinal oncology. Dr. Koschny's work bridges fundamental molecular research with clinical applications, developing novel endoscopic approaches for diagnosis and treatment. His laboratory investigates cellular mechanisms underlying gastrointestinal diseases while translating these findings into clinical practice through the Section of Translational Endoscopy Research.

Analysis of his publication record reveals an evolution from fundamental molecular studies toward increasingly translational and clinical research. His recent work incorporates advanced methodologies including patient-derived organoids, single-cell transcriptomics, and multicenter clinical trials, reflecting the integration of basic science with practical clinical endoscopy applications.

Dr. Koschny has secured competitive research funding throughout his career, including a DFG research fellowship (2005-2006) and research funding from the Marsilius-Kolleg at Heidelberg University (2013-2014). As Section Head of the Section of Translational Endoscopy Research, he mentors junior researchers and clinicians in developing innovative endoscopic techniques. His leadership extends to the Polyposis Consultation Hour, where he provides specialized care for patients with hereditary gastrointestinal cancer syndromes.

At the Interdisciplinary Endoscopy Center, Dr. Koschny leads a multidisciplinary team that collaborates across medical specialties to advance endoscopic procedures. His research group focuses on developing novel endoscopic interventions while investigating the molecular basis of gastrointestinal diseases, creating a seamless pipeline from bench to bedside.
