Professor Ronald H Baxendale serves as Professor of Anatomy in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow, with extensive teaching experience across undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Life Sciences and Medicine. Previously Head of the Human Biological Sciences group (2011-2018), he modernized curricula and introduced new Human Biology programs including joint honors degrees. He currently acts as External Examiner at Trinity College Dublin and previously at Newcastle and Dundee Universities, while maintaining active research and supervision roles.
His research spans human physiology with emphases on exercise science, environmental stressors, and neuromuscular control. Key investigations include temperature effects on athletic performance, ergogenic properties of plant extracts like Khat, exercise-induced biomarker changes (VEGF, endostatin), and motor function in cerebral palsy and hypermobility syndromes. His work consistently employs human experimental methodologies across diverse populations.
Publication trends from 2007-2021 reveal sustained focus on physiological mechanisms in sports performance and movement science, with recent expansion into educational innovation through remote learning projects. The majority address sports physiology, pharmacological interventions, and neurophysiological control systems.
Professional recognition includes:
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology
- Member of the Physiological Society
Professor Baxendale has supervised eight PhD students across exercise physiology, cerebral palsy interventions, and nutritional studies. His research funding includes a significant Arthritis Research Campaign grant (2001-2005) investigating musculoskeletal reflex dysfunction in hypermobility syndrome, demonstrating sustained ability to secure competitive research support.
