Ronald B. Kelley

Ronald B. Kelley is an Associate Professor in Journalism Studies at the Missouri School of Journalism, University of Missouri. He has played a pivotal role in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through leadership in student development programs, high school outreach, and research on race and media. He serves as project director for major grants and oversees key educational initiatives, including the Chancellor’s Leadership Class and summer journalism workshops for high school students.

His research interests center on cross-cultural journalism, diversity in newsrooms, leadership development, and race and media representation. He has led comprehensive studies such as the Guide to Research on Race and News and the Strategic Study on Race & News, both funded by the Ford Foundation. His work bridges academic scholarship with practical training for journalists and managers in evolving media environments.

Kelley has received notable recognition including the Booker T. Washington Advisor of the Year Award (2022), the President’s Award for Community Engagement (2021), and the Taft Award (2021). These honors reflect his deep commitment to student mentorship and community impact.

As project director for an NBCUniversal News Group grant through NBCU Academy, Kelley supports scholarships for underrepresented journalism students and leads professional development training for transitioning remote workers and managing diverse teams. He has over 30 years of experience in higher education advancement, media, and communications leadership, including serving as assistant vice chancellor for Advancement at Mizzou.

Kelley previously directed the Multicultural Management Program at the Missouri School of Journalism and has extensive professional experience as a television reporter and anchor in Louisiana. He also served as assistant news director at KOMU-TV. His leadership extends to coordinating national outreach efforts and alumni engagement in journalism education.
