Ron Wakkary is a Full Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU Eindhoven) and Simon Fraser University (Canada), where he leads the Interaction Design Research Centre and the Everyday Design Studio. His work bridges Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), tangible computing, and design philosophy, emphasizing the role of technologies in everyday life through a lens of more-than-human collaboration. Wakkary holds a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, an MFA from SUNY, and a PhD in HCI from the University of Plymouth.
His research focuses on reimagining interaction design to prioritize ecological and ethical considerations, advocating for computational systems as 'resources' rather than finished products. Key themes include designing with non-human entities, participatory methodologies, and critical reflections on technology’s role in society.
Recent publications explore liminal spaces in design, unmaking practices, and collaborative making processes, reflecting a trend toward interdisciplinary, ecologically grounded research. Wakkary has delivered multiple keynote addresses on topics like 'more-than-human design' and serves on editorial boards for journals like ACM Interactions and the International Journal of Design.
He has supervised 8 research projects and actively engages in media discussions on AI ethics, sustainable design, and beyond-human-centered frameworks. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and responsible consumption.
