He currently serves as the First Year Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator and Chemistry IT Coordinator. His roles include teaching first-year and advanced chemistry courses such as CHEM1001, CHEM1031, and CHEM3011, focusing on topics like physical chemistry, thermodynamics, and quantum mechanics.
Education: Ron Haines earned his B.Sc. (Hons 1, University Medal) and Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from UNSW in 1978 and 1982, respectively. His postdoctoral research under Prof. Brian Orr involved time-resolved laser spectroscopy.
Research Interests: Haines' work spans chemical reaction kinetics, ionic liquid science, and chemical education. He collaborates with Assoc. Prof. Jason Harper to study reaction mechanisms in ionic liquids as green solvents. His educational focus includes integrating technology (e.g., iPads) into laboratory teaching to enhance student engagement and practical skills.
Teaching and Engagement: Beyond research, he actively participates in educational outreach, advising prospective students and supporting competitions like the RACI Titration Competition. His teaching covers atomic/molecular structure, thermodynamics, and spectroscopy.
Awards: He has received the Vice-Chancellor's award for Teaching Excellence (2011) and a team award (2016), reflecting his commitment to education.
