Dr Ron Hackney is a Research Professor and Director of the Australian and New Zealand International Scientific Drilling Consortium (ANZIC) within the Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES) at ANU. His research focuses on geophysics, tectonics, and the application of gravity data to understand continental rifting, subduction zones, and paleoclimate systems. He leads initiatives in scientific drilling to explore Earth's past environments and tectonic processes.
Key projects include studies of the Lord Howe Rise, New Caledonia Trough, and Antarctic tectonics. His work integrates geophysical data with field observations to address questions about continental breakup, sedimentary basin formation, and lithospheric dynamics. Dr Hackney has contributed to over 17 peer-reviewed publications and actively participates in international drilling consortiums.
Recent research highlights include the 2018 study on southern Indian Ocean drilling priorities and the 2023 report on future drilling strategies. His work bridges geophysics with applied geology, emphasizing frontier basin exploration and climate history reconstruction.
