Romy Opperman

Romy Opperman is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at The New School for Social Research, part of The New School. She holds a PhD from The Pennsylvania State University (2020), an MPhil from the University of Cambridge (2013), and a BA from the University of Warwick (2012). Her research bridges Africana, continental, decolonial, environmental, and feminist philosophy, focusing on racism, colonialism, and ecological justice. She critiques liberal theories of justice and explores Black diasporic philosophies to reimagine socio-ecological liberation.

Her work emphasizes 'racist environments' and 'ecological freedom,' interrogating how racialized ecologies shape environmental ethics. She teaches courses like Black Feminist Survival and Sylvia Wynter, integrating critical theory with anti-colonial praxis. She has received the Mellon Initiative for Inclusive Faculty Excellence Fellowship (2021-2023).

Recent publications include a forthcoming book Groundings: Black Ecologies of Freedom and articles on Sylvia Wynter’s critical theory, nuclear anti-colonial feminism, and Charles Mills’ work. Her presentations span universities like Columbia, NYU, and the University of Copenhagen, addressing topics ranging from abolition ecology to decolonial science studies.
