Romina Kraus is an Associate Professor and Senior Research Associate at the Center for Marine Research, Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI), Croatia. Her primary affiliation is with the interdisciplinary marine science division focusing on ecological and oceanographic research in the Adriatic Sea. She holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Zagreb (2005), with prior MSc (2001) and BSc (1996) degrees in Biology from the same institution.
Her research focuses on marine ecology, climate change impacts, plankton dynamics, and biological invasions. Key projects include leading the RBI team in the ProtectAS project (2020–2023), coordinating ballast water management studies, and investigating the ecological responses to climatic changes in the northern Adriatic. She has also been involved in EU-funded initiatives like the BALMAS project and the ECOPOL program.
Dr. Kraus' work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating oceanography, ecology, and environmental policy. Her recent studies address microbiological pollution near shipping ports, invasive species spread via ballast water, and predictive modeling of anchovy stocks based on winter oceanographic conditions. She teaches Algology at Juraj Dobrila University of Pula and mentors students in marine science projects.
Her awards include the 2015 Ruđer Bošković Annual Award for her work on mucilage events and recognition from the European Commission’s Science for Environment Policy. She actively contributes to professional societies like the Croatian Biological Society and participates in international conferences on marine biology and environmental monitoring.
