Roman Hillmann serves as Professor of Industrial Heritage Conservation at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Georg Agricola (THGA) in Bochum, where he teaches in the master's program 'Material Engineering and Industrial Heritage Conservation'. Concurrently, he acts as Project Coordinator for the Heritage Conservation Center (hcc.ruhr) at the German Mining Museum in Bochum. His academic background is in architectural and structural engineering history, with specialized expertise in post-war German architecture, industrial buildings, and monument preservation.
His research focuses on industrial heritage conservation methodologies, architectural evolution in divided Germany, and structural preservation techniques. His recent Habilitation at the University of Stuttgart examined 'Character of the Eastern Modern Movement', analyzing GDR building policies, serial architecture aesthetics, and urban planning contrasts between East and West Germany.
As coordinator of the Heritage Conservation Center, Hillmann leads initiatives focused on industrial heritage preservation. His work bridges academic research with practical conservation applications, particularly in post-industrial regions like the Ruhr area.
