Roman Bednarik is a Professor at the School of Computing, University of Eastern Finland within the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology. His research focuses on eye tracking technologies applied to surgical training, medical imaging, and human-computer interaction. Key projects include ER4Surgery (Research-to-Business) and studies on early Alzheimer's detection using multimodal fusion networks. Bednarik leads the Interactive Technologies research group and has contributed to advancements in microsurgical training systems through machine learning and instrument detection algorithms.
Research Interests: Eye tracking applications in surgery, human factors in medical environments, machine learning for healthcare, and wearable technology for clinical assessment. His work bridges computer science with biomedical engineering to improve surgical skill evaluation and patient diagnosis through innovative sensor systems and data analysis techniques.
Publications & Contributions: Over 150 peer-reviewed articles spanning eye movement analysis in programming, surgical proficiency metrics, and neurosurgical visualization systems. Notable outputs include deep learning models for microsurgical instrument detection and gaze-based stress assessment tools in operating rooms.
