Romain Bertrand is a distinguished FNSP Research Professor at Sciences Po Paris, holding joint appointments at the Center for International Studies (CERI) and the Centre for History (CHSP). With a career spanning over two decades at Sciences Po since joining in 2001, he has established himself as a leading scholar in global history and the historiography of colonialism, with particular expertise on Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
His research interests focus on historiography of colonialism, global history, imperial encounters, and microhistory. Bertrand has pioneered the concept of 'global microhistory,' combining detailed historical analysis with transnational perspectives to challenge Eurocentric historical narratives. His work examines cross-cultural interactions in the early modern period, particularly between European and Asian societies, with emphasis on Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
Bertrand's recent publications reveal a consistent focus on re-examining historical encounters through symmetrical lenses, questioning traditional narratives about European exploration and colonialism. His 2024 book 'Les Grandes Déconvenues' critically analyzes the 1529 French expedition to Sumatra, challenging myths about European discovery and colonial history.
