Rolf Bertsch is a Facilitator and Piano Faculty member at the Academy & APP, renowned for his dual career as a conductor and pianist. He has held significant roles including Assistant Conductor of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Resident Conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and Music Director of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. His expertise spans classical repertoire, particularly Strauss, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff, as well as contemporary music.
- Education: Diplomas from McGill University, Mozarteum (Salzburg), Conservatoire de musique du Québec (Montréal), Folkwang Hochschule (Essen), and Phillips Academy (Andover).
Research interests focus on orchestral conducting, piano performance, and educational outreach. He has pioneered innovative programming, such as film music collaborations and youth-oriented performances. His leadership includes founding Ensemble Début and the 'Music at Mount Royal' concert series.
- Awards: Canadian Music Competitions Laureate.
Advising and mentorship roles include work with Calgary’s Rosa Selvetica chamber ensemble and educational initiatives through orchestras. He has contributed to arts policy as a Program Officer at the Canada Council for the Arts.
