Roland W. Stein is a Professor in the Departments of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics and Cell and Developmental Biology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He holds the Mark Collie Chair in Diabetes Research. His research focuses on pancreatic islet cell biology, specifically the transcriptional regulation of genes like Pdx-1 and MafA that control beta cell formation and function. He employs advanced techniques including CRISPR/Cas9, islet cell transplantation, and mass spectrometry.
Research interests include understanding mechanisms governing alpha and beta cell function, with applications toward diabetes therapy development. His work integrates human embryonic stem cells, animal models, and human islet studies to uncover coregulators of transcription factors critical for islet function.
Dr. Stein leads an active research group, having mentored trainees who secured tenure-track positions (e.g., Chad Hunter at UAB, Holly Cyphert at Marshall University). He collaborates with twelve groups in the Vanderbilt islet cell biology community through bi-monthly meetings. His lab is located in 8425C MRB IV, and he actively recruits postdocs with expertise in cell/molecular biology and biochemistry.
Scientific contributions include defining pathways for beta cell regeneration and identifying therapeutic targets to combat diabetes. The Mark Collie Chair endowment supports his diabetes research initiatives.
