Roland Gehrels is Professor and Head of the Department of Environment and Geography at the University of York, UK. He specializes in Quaternary geology and sea-level studies, with research focusing on reconstructing historical sea-level changes, coastal carbon dynamics, and glacial isostatic adjustment. Previously, he spent 18 years at Plymouth University, where he progressed from Lecturer to Professor and led the Quaternary Environments Research Group.
Education:
- PhD in Geology (Holocene sea-level changes), University of Maine, USA
- MSc in Applied Quaternary Geology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
His research investigates sea-level acceleration mechanisms during interglacial periods, blue carbon storage in intertidal ecosystems, and the development of microfossil-based reconstruction methods. Current projects include carbon sequestration in saltmarshes (C-SIDE) and extreme sea-level events (ExTaSea).
Gehrels' recent publications (2019-2024) demonstrate a strong focus on: 1) Quantifying blue carbon accumulation in British saltmarshes under sea-level rise, 2) Reconstructing multi-century sea-level variability using geological proxies, and 3) Validating glacial isostatic adjustment models through empirical paleo-sea-level records. His work consistently integrates sedimentology, geochronology, and statistical modeling.
Advising & Grants:
- NERC Standard Grant: Carbon storage in intertidal environments (C-SIDE)
- Marie Curie Fellowship: EXtreme upper TAil of SEA level rise (ExTaSea)
- NERC ACCE DTP studentships on sea-level/carbon dynamics (6+ projects)
He leads the Sea-Level Research Cluster and collaborates internationally through INQUA and UNESCO initiatives. No major scientific awards are listed in the provided text.
