Rohit Rao is a PhD Student and Tutor at the University of Glasgow, affiliated with the College of Social Sciences and the Sociological & Cultural Studies department. He also holds posts within the Student Learning Development team as a Peer Learning Tutor and teaches Sociology Level 1 and Transition to Glasgow (T2G) programs.
His educational background includes:
- Undergraduate degree with dissertation on paleoclimate reconstruction through tree rings
- Master's degree researching (un)belonging among Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children
- Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and General Teaching Council for Scotland membership
- Current PhD studies in Sociological & Cultural Studies
Rao's research centers on race and racism in Scottish secondary education, examining how young people of color navigate structural racism. His work extends to migration, diaspora, and educational belonging, informed by his master's research on asylum-seeking children. He actively promotes antiracist practices as an employability lead across Glasgow.
His sole publication (2014) in dendroclimatology reflects early climate science work, using tree-ring analysis for British Columbia climate reconstruction. While distinct from his current sociological focus, this demonstrates interdisciplinary expertise spanning environmental science and social justice.
Funded by a College of Social Sciences studentship, Rao mentors undergraduate students through T2G and peer learning initiatives. His teaching combines secondary education experience from London, French overseas departments, and Australia with academic research.
