Roger Shiner is Adjunct Professor in Philosophy at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus. A legal philosopher specializing in criminal law and corporate liability, his research examines philosophical foundations of corporate criminal responsibility and historical developments in analytical jurisprudence.
His current project analyzes the criminalization of corporate wrongdoing, addressing philosophical objections to corporate personhood in criminal law. Secondary research investigates HLA Hart's evolving concept of judicial discretion. Shiner has published extensively on freedom of commercial expression, normativity in law, and aesthetic theory.
Honors include Killam Senior Research Fellowship and H.L.A. Hart Visiting Fellowship. He has served as president of the Canadian Association for Philosophy of Law and on editorial boards for Journal of Business Ethics and Legal Theory. Shiner retired from full-time teaching in 2018 after appointments at University of Alberta and Okanagan College.
