Roger Samelson is a Professor at Oregon State University (OSU) within the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS). His research focuses on fluid dynamics and thermodynamics of the ocean and atmosphere, coastal meteorology, and nonlinear dynamics of geophysical fluids. He holds a BS in Physics from Stanford University (1981), and both an MS (Mathematics) and PhD (Physical Oceanography) from Oregon State University (1987).
Before joining OSU as Associate Professor in 1997, he held positions at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, including roles as GFD Summer Fellow (1983), Postdoctoral Investigator (1987–89), Assistant Scientist (1989–93), and Associate Scientist with tenure (1997). His work integrates theoretical, numerical, and observational methods to advance understanding of oceanic and atmospheric processes.
Samelson has been recognized with prestigious fellowships from the American Geophysical Union (2015), American Meteorological Society (2016), and The Oceanography Society (2019). His contributions span coastal dynamics, arctic meteorology, and large-scale ocean circulation studies.
