Roger H Keil is a Distinguished Research Professor at York University's Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change. His research focuses on urban political ecology, global suburbanization, and urban governance related to infectious diseases. He holds a Dr.Phil. in Political Science from Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität.
Key research projects include leadership of the 'Global Suburbanisms' initiative (2010-19), co-authorship of Pandemic Urbanism (2023), and CIFAR Fellowship in Humanity’s Urban Future (2023-28). He directs York's City Institute (CITY) and has held a York Research Chair in Global Sub/Urban Studies.
Recent work addresses urban filth, climate emergency responses, and infrastructure governance. Awards include the 2024 York Research Award for Knowledge Mobilization and a 2023 CIFAR Fellowship. His teaching includes courses on global cities and urban planning in a globalizing world.
Research spans urban peripheries, pandemic governance, and the intersections of urbanization with health and environment. Current projects involve comparative urban studies in cities like Toronto, Milan, and Kinshasa, emphasizing climate resilience and equitable urban futures.
