Roger Baig Viñas

Roger Baig Viñas is a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Architecture at the Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), a position he has held since 2023. He is actively involved in research on distributed systems, community networks, and decentralized technologies. His work is closely tied to the CNDS - Computer Networks and Distributed Systems research group at UPC.

His research interests focus on the design, deployment, and sustainability of community networks and community clouds, particularly through the guifi.net initiative. He has led and participated in major European projects such as CONFINE, Clommunity, netCommons, CAPTOR, RIFE, LeadingEdge, and DiPET. His recent work extends into decentralized systems, including e-voting, Ethereum, and zero-knowledge proofs. His publications consistently explore themes of open commons, collective infrastructure, and resilient networking models.

The trend in his recent publications shows a shift from foundational work on community network infrastructure and cloud deployment to more advanced topics in edge computing, decentralized protocols, and economic models. His work bridges technical innovation with societal impact, often addressing digital inclusion, sustainability, and self-governance in networked systems.

His scientific achievements include receiving the European Broadband Award 2015 and a Margarita Salas postdoctoral grant, highlighting recognition of his contributions to community networking and research excellence.

Roger Baig has supervised numerous undergraduate and Master’s final projects and is open to mentoring students in areas such as e-voting, zero-knowledge proofs, and community networks. He has been involved in teaching innovation, including a project on migrating computer architecture education to the RISC-V platform. His research has been funded by competitive national and European grants, including Horizon 2020 and national R&D programs.

He is a co-founder of the Aragon ZK Research association and Routek SL, and actively contributes to Internet governance forums such as IETF, ICANN, and ITU. His work is supported by long-term collaborations with researchers like Leandro Navarro, Felix Freitag, and others within the UPC and international community.
