Rodrigo Ferrão de Paiva Martins is a Full Professor in the Department of Materials Science at NOVA School of Science and Technology. He serves as Director of the Center of Excellence in Microelectronics and Optoelectronic Processes (CEMOP/Uninova) and Head of the Materials for Electronics, Optoelectronics and Nanotechnologies (MEON) group at CENIMAT/I3N. He is a member of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering (since 2009) and the European Academy of Sciences (since 2016), where he holds the President role.
His research spans transparent electronics, paper electronics, and amorphous silicon semiconductors. Notably, he co-invented paper electronics where paper acts as a functional component in devices. His work has received international recognition including multiple Innovation Awards and a Gold Medal of Merit from Almada City Council.
Key roles include advising Horizon 2020 DG Research and Innovation, chairing committees for the European Materials Research Society and International Union of Materials Research Societies, and vice-presidency at Energy, Materials Industry Research Initiative (EMIRI). His publications number over 700, with recent works focusing on recyclable electronics and flexible oxide devices.
