Rodrigo A. Velez is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the Carlos Alvarez College of Business, University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He serves as the Project Steering Committee Chair and Academic Director of xQuant@ACOB, a federally funded initiative expanding quantitative business programs. Previously, he held positions at Texas A&M University. His research focuses on Market Design, Algorithmic Game Theory, and Behavioral Economic Theory, particularly addressing fair division, rent allocation, and common-ownership resource problems. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Rochester, an M.Sc. in Mathematics from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, and bachelor’s degrees in Economics (EAFIT) and Civil Engineering (EIA).
Research Interests: Market Design, Algorithmic Game Theory, Behavioral Economic Theory, Common-Ownership Resource Allocation, Fair Division, and Computational Fair Division. Recent work includes developing polynomial algorithms for envy-free rent division and analyzing strategy-proof mechanisms.
Grants & Projects: Lead the $2.8M PPOHA Grant (2024-2029) for xQuant, which expands UTSA’s quantitative business master’s programs. His research has been published in top journals like Games and Economic Behavior and American Economic Journal: Microeconomics.
Teaching: Graduate and undergraduate microeconomic theory. Serves as Graduate Advisor of Record and Program Director for UTSA’s M.Sc. in Economics and M.Sc. in Business Research.
