Rodolfo Dirzo is the Bing Professor in Environmental Science at Stanford University, holding joint appointments in the Department of Biology (School of Humanities and Sciences) and the Department of Earth System Science (Doerr School of Sustainability). He serves as Associate Dean for Integrative Initiatives in Environmental Justice and Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment.

Dirzo's research explores species interactions in tropical ecosystems, with a focus on quantifying the sixth mass extinction and its cascading effects on ecosystem services. His work spans Latin America, California, and Africa, examining defaunation, plant-animal relationships, and zoonotic disease dynamics.
Recent publications highlight his leadership in documenting the global decline of apex scavengers and their public health implications, as well as the 2024 Brazilian wildfire crisis. His lab integrates field experiments, climate change modeling, and cross-continental collaborations.
