Professor Rodney Smith is a Professor of Australian Politics at the University of Sydney's School of Social and Political Sciences. He has served as Interim Head of the School (2021–2023). His expertise spans Australian political institutions, electoral systems, and public ethics. Smith holds a BA and MA from the University of Queensland and a PhD from the University of Sydney.
His research focuses on trust in politics, parliamentary dynamics, electoral behavior, and corruption prevention. Key projects include studies on hung parliaments, federalism, and early voting trends. He has authored influential books like Contemporary Australian Political Party Organisations (2015) and edited volumes on NSW Labor governance (2012).
Smith teaches courses on Australian politics, public ethics, and parliamentary systems. He has advised on electoral reform and contributed to integrity frameworks in NSW. Awards include the 2020 APSA Academic Leadership Award and 2017 Faculty Teaching Award.
His academic networks include the Australian Political Studies Association (Past President), the Australasian Study of Parliament Group, and the Institute of Public Administration Australia. Current research explores public mistrust in democracy and constitutional values.
