Professor Roddy Vann leads research in theoretical and experimental plasma physics at the University of York's York Plasma Institute. As Fusion CDT Programme Director, he specializes in magnetically-confined fusion plasmas with emphasis on microwave heating, wave-particle interactions, and turbulence modeling for tokamak reactors.
Research areas:
- Full-wave simulations of microwave-plasma interactions
- Synthetic aperture microwave imaging (MAST-U tokamak)
- 3-D magnetic field configurations for ITER
- Wave-particle resonant interactions
- BOUT++ framework for plasma turbulence
Professor Vann has supervised 4 PhD students and co-supervised 4 others on projects spanning microwave diagnostics, turbulence simulations, and fast particle confinement. His group develops computational models to optimize heating efficiency in spherical tokamaks like STEP.
