Roch Guerin

Roch Guerin is the Harold B. and Adelaide G. Welge Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU). His research focuses on edge computing, network optimization, and traffic engineering, with particular emphasis on latency constraints, resource allocation, and real-time systems. He leads projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and industry partners such as Google, Comcast, and Huawei.

Key research interests include edge offloading strategies, non-work-conserving networking, and the integration of machine learning into network systems. His work on traffic reprofiling has demonstrated significant bandwidth savings in both single-hop and multi-hop networks. Recent projects explore adaptive edge computing frameworks for image classification and progressive neural compression under timing constraints.

Dr. Guerin’s contributions span over two decades, with notable publications on IPv6 migration challenges, cloud service pricing strategies, and network technology adoption barriers. He has advised students like Jiayi Song (now at ByteDance) and Jiaming Qiu, contributing to impactful research in edge computing and traffic engineering.

His grants and industry collaborations reflect a commitment to bridging theoretical advancements with practical implementations. Notable awards include the Best Student Paper Award at IEEE RTSS 2023 for work on adaptive image offloading.

Current lab activities involve WashU researchers Chenyang Lu and Ruiqi Wang, alongside industry collaborators such as Google’s Henry Sariowan. His work continues to address foundational challenges in network efficiency and scalability.
