Robin Shields is a Professor and Head of the School of Education at the University of Queensland, leading a prominent center for educational research and teaching in Australia and internationally. His academic career spans roles at the University of Bath and University of Bristol in the UK, where he directed doctoral programs and received the University of Bristol’s Inspiring and Innovative Teaching Award in 2021. He holds a PhD from UCLA and has served as co-editor of the Comparative Education Review and on the executive committee of the British Association for International Education.
Shields’s research focuses on globalization and education, leveraging social network analysis and statistical modeling to explore themes such as international student mobility, climate change impacts on education, social justice, and decentralization in educational governance. His work bridges higher education policy with social equity, emphasizing data-driven insights and technological innovation in teaching, including gamification and simulation-based learning.
Recent publications analyze climate change and student mobility in Europe, gender equity in Asia through philanthropy, and decentralization effects on learning outcomes in India. His network analysis approaches reveal patterns in educational hubs, aid distribution, and technological integration in curricula. Shields actively consults for UNESCO and international NGOs, with grants from UK ESRC, European Commission, and the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education.
