Robin Queen is a Professor and the L. Preston Wade Professor of Engineering in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics at Virginia Tech's College of Engineering. She is based in Norris Hall and leads the Granata Biomechanics Lab, where she conducts cutting-edge research in biomechanics with applications in sports, rehabilitation, and clinical settings.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2004
- M.S. in Biomedical Engineering, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2001
- B.S. in Applied Science - Biomaterials, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2000
Her research interests include foot and ankle biomechanics, sports biomechanics, footwear biomechanics, load and movement symmetry, rehabilitation engineering, and post-operative return to function. She develops and implements clinic- and field-based assessments to evaluate patient outcomes and injury risk.
Recent publications focus on gait mechanics, ACL injury prevention, racial and sex-based differences in biomechanics, wearable sensor validation, and surgical recovery prediction. Her work leverages advanced biomechanical analysis to address health disparities and improve rehabilitation strategies.
Scientific Awards and Honors:
- Fellow, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (FAIMBE), 2022
- Fellow, American Society of Biomechanics, 2021
- Fellow, International Orthopaedic Research (FIOR), 2019
- Fellow, American College of Sports Medicine, 2014
- Jean Landa Pytel Award, American Society of Biomechanics, 2023
- Honorary Doctor of Science, Union College, 2022
- Adele Boskey Award, Orthopaedic Research Society, 2020
- ELATES Fellow, 2019–2020
- AAOS Kappa Delta Young Investigator Award, 2017
Dr. Queen has advised numerous graduate students and secured significant research funding. She holds leadership roles in major professional societies, including serving on the Executive Boards of the American Society of Biomechanics and Orthopaedic Research Society, and chairs key committees focused on diversity, equity, and program development. Her lab actively engages in clinical trials and translational research to improve patient outcomes in orthopaedics and sports medicine.
The Granata Biomechanics Lab is a multidisciplinary research team focused on understanding human movement through biomechanical analysis, developing wearable technologies, and translating findings into clinical and athletic applications. The lab collaborates with clinicians, engineers, and scientists to advance rehabilitation engineering and injury prevention.
