Robin Lefere

Robin Lefere is a Professor of Hispanic Literatures at the Free University of Brussels (ULB), where he has held the chair of Hispanic literature since 2008, previously serving as Titular Professor since 1998. Born in Brussels on February 4, 1963, he holds dual doctorates: a Doctor of Philosophy and Letters from the Free University of Brussels (1991, "with the highest distinction") and a Doctor in Philosophy and Letters (Hispanic Philology) from the Autonomous University of Madrid (1995, "apto cum laude").

Lefere's research focuses on Hispanic literature, particularly the work of Jorge Luis Borges, comparative literature between Spain and France, and Hispanic cinema. His scholarly contributions include a dozen books and numerous articles, with recent works including Abel Sánchez. The Other, by M. de Unamuno (2023), Perspectivas sobre el futuro de la narrativa hispánica (2020), and Nuevas perspectivas sobre la transnacionalidad del cine hispánico (2016). His Borges scholarship includes three dedicated books: Borges y los poderes de la literatura (1998), Borges en Bruselas (2000), and Borges, entre autorretrato y automitografía (2005).

His recent publications reveal a continued scholarly trajectory examining historical-fantastical narratives, Borges-Unamuno connections, and the evolution of Hispanic narrative. Lefere's work demonstrates consistent engagement with questions of authorial presence, literary influence, and transnational literary circulation. His editorial work on contemporary Hispanic narrative shows particular interest in the relationship between traditional literary forms and emerging digital culture.

Lefere has taught at prestigious institutions worldwide including Sorbonne (Paris III and Paris IV), École Normale Supérieure, Università di Milano, and numerous Spanish and Latin American universities. He was recruited by the Sorbonne in 2010 for a position in Comparative Literature but chose to remain at ULB. His international academic presence is further evidenced by his extensive publication record and editorial work across multiple languages and scholarly contexts.
