معرفی
Robin Klemm is an Associate Professor of Physiological Metabolism at the University of Oxford's Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, and serves as a Tutorial Fellow in Medicine at Somerville College. He leads the Klemm Lab, which focuses on the molecular basis of lipid metabolism in adipocytes (professional fat-storing cells), investigating how lipid transport at membrane contact sites impacts functional remodeling of organelles during cell fate determination in differentiation and nutrient stress.
Dr. Klemm earned his PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics under Kai Simons, where he developed novel organelle isolation methods for proteomics and lipidomics analysis. He then completed postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School in Tom Rapoport's lab, reconstituting homotypic ER fusion pathways with purified GTPases. He established his independent research group at the University of Zurich before moving to Oxford in 2020.
His research focuses on lipid droplet biology in adipocytes, with particular interest in the spatial organization of metabolism across organelles. The Klemm Lab has identified molecular machinery coupling mitochondria, the ER, and lipid droplets, with implications for understanding and treating metabolic diseases. His work bridges cell biology, biochemistry, and physiology to elucidate fundamental mechanisms of lipid metabolism, with applications for type II diabetes, obesity, lipodystrophies and cardiovascular disease.
Analysis of Dr. Klemm's publication record reveals a consistent trajectory from fundamental organelle biology to metabolic applications. His early work established methods for membrane lipidome analysis and ER structure, while his more recent publications focus increasingly on adipocyte-specific lipid metabolism and its disease implications. His research combines biochemical, cell biological, and imaging approaches to understand how spatial organization of metabolism affects cellular function and whole-body health.

Dr. Klemm has mentored students and researchers throughout his career at the Max Planck Institute, Harvard Medical School, University of Zurich, and now at Oxford. His laboratory receives substantial grant funding supporting research into the molecular mechanisms of lipid metabolism with potential therapeutic applications. His work has been cited extensively and referenced in multiple patents and Wikipedia pages, indicating significant impact in the field.
The Klemm Lab operates within Oxford's Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, collaborating with researchers across the university and internationally. The lab utilizes advanced techniques in cell biology, biochemistry, and imaging to study lipid metabolism and organelle dynamics in adipocytes, with research findings published in high-impact journals including Cell, Nature, and PNAS.
