Robin Klemm

Robin Klemm is an Associate Professor of Physiological Metabolism at the University of Oxford's Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, and serves as a Tutorial Fellow in Medicine at Somerville College. He leads the Klemm Lab, which focuses on the molecular basis of lipid metabolism in adipocytes (professional fat-storing cells), investigating how lipid transport at membrane contact sites impacts functional remodeling of organelles during cell fate determination in differentiation and nutrient stress.

Dr. Klemm earned his PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics under Kai Simons, where he developed novel organelle isolation methods for proteomics and lipidomics analysis. He then completed postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School in Tom Rapoport's lab, reconstituting homotypic ER fusion pathways with purified GTPases. He established his independent research group at the University of Zurich before moving to Oxford in 2020.

His research focuses on lipid droplet biology in adipocytes, with particular interest in the spatial organization of metabolism across organelles. The Klemm Lab has identified molecular machinery coupling mitochondria, the ER, and lipid droplets, with implications for understanding and treating metabolic diseases.
