Robin Fretwell Wilson holds the Mildred Van Voorhis Jones Chair in Law at the University of Illinois College of Law and serves as NOVA’s Visiting Scholar in Law and Sustainability. A leading authority in family law, she has ranked among the Top Ten Family Law Scholars in the United States for scholarly impact in every Leiter Report since 2010.
Her research focuses on bridging cultural divides through legal frameworks, specializing in family law, health law, LGBT rights, and religious freedom. She co-directs the Epstein Health Law & Policy Program and Family Law & Policy Program, and founded the Tolerance Means Dialogues initiative—funded by private philanthropy—to address culture war conflicts through structured dialogue.
Professor Wilson’s legislative impact includes eight honors for innovative lawmaking, notably contributing to the 2022 Respect for Marriage Act, hailed as the most significant LGBT rights legislation in a decade. Her work consistently addresses intersections between civil rights and religious protections.
As a member of the American Law Institute, she mentors students in family law and policy. Her Tolerance Means Dialogues initiative operates through private philanthropic grants, while her dual institutional roles advance sustainability-focused legal scholarship between the University of Illinois and NOVA School of Law.
