Robin Archer

Robin Archer is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He directs the MSc Political Sociology programme and convenes courses on Political Sociology and Politics and Society. His academic journey includes a DPhil in Politics from Oxford University and a Commonwealth Scholarship. He previously taught at Oxford University as a Fellow in Politics at Corpus Christi College.

• Education: First degree in Physics, Mathematics, and Philosophy at Sydney University (awarded University Medal); DPhil in Politics from Balliol College, Oxford.
• Research: Focuses on labour movements, social movements, political philosophy, comparative political economy, and political culture. Current projects explore American political culture and the future of the left.
• Global Engagements: Has served as a Visiting Fellow at Princeton, Columbia, Sydney University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.

Archer’s publications address themes such as conscription conflicts (e.g., The Conscription Conflict and the Great War), the absence of a US labor party (e.g., Why Is There No Labor Party in the United States?), and the interplay between liberalism and repression. His recent articles examine honor in war decisions, elected upper houses, and the legacy of capitalism. He is part of the LSE Politics and Human Rights research cluster.
